The UAA at El Camino College is a 8-week program, with in-class and laboratory instruction led by a highly experienced CNC operator and instructor, plus classes on job readiness, soft skills, and open laboratory. Students will learn to setup and operate CNC machines combined with using quality control instruments, shop mathematics and blueprint reading.  Students will be introduced to the principles and operation of conventional and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machine tools with an emphasis on safety, measurement, hand tools, power saws, drilling machines, lathes, and milling and grinding machines focusing on practices and setups used in industry.

Graduates will qualify for a number of entry-level positions, including machine trainee, machinist apprentice, CNC operator, and CNC programmer.

The Uniquely Abled Academy at El Camino College provides an intensive career preparation program for job seekers with high functioning autism looking for an opportunity to start a new career as a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machinist.

WHAT A CNC MACHINIST?

CNC machinists use machine tools, such as computer numerically controlled (CNC) lathes and mills to produce precision metal parts requiring the use of complex operations and great attention to detail. CNC machines, following a computer program, control the cutting tool speeds and feeds, as well as sequencing the tool changing process for specific operations. The CNC machinist controls their CNC machine in performing all necessary cuts to complete an operation or to create a complete part. CNC machinists sometimes work with numerical control programmers to determine how the automated equipment will produce a part.

This program is for candidates seeking entry-level positions in CNC machining operations and a long-term career path in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical device, and other manufacturing companies.

  • The Uniquely Abled Academy provides overall coordination and project management of activities such as application assessment and intake process; organizing delivery of funding and services to trainees; and administration duties such as – record keeping, assisting with employment services, and overall positive behavioral support for trainees.
